A must

This place is a must if you're headed to San Francisco. Make sure to bring a jacket since it can be a bit chilly on island, at least it was when we went. Everything is very well organized and you can visit the prison with guided-tour headphones (in many languages) and explore at your own pace and take pictures. There's a boat back to the mainland every hour or so. You're taught about life at the prison, you see where inmates arrived, the cells where they spoke with relatives, where the guards lived, the hsitory of some of the escape attempts, and the reasons the prison was eventually closed. Al Capone was the most famous and well-known prisoner there. Again, it's a must if you're in San Francisco. If you go, try to get the tickets ahead of time.

Essential

In Alcatraz rights were the only food, shelter and health. During his first period had no right to work or distractions of any kind. Less controversial Prisoners went outside an hour a week. The most contentious were isolated from other cells in complete darkness for days. The ride with headphones in Spanish we describe both the place, the history of riots and escape, as the daily life of the prisoners. You start in the basement, where prisoners arrived and showered. Downstairs appreciate the different galleries on three floors, access to the outdoor patio, the punishment cells and the library. We also visit the area of the guards and the warden's office. In this area there are spectacular views of San Francisco. If you want more info here is the visit ' http://www.mibauldeblogs.com/2011/09/visita-alcatraz-la-roca-prision-de-san.html'

Imprescindible

Visit to la roca

Alcatraz Island, also known as The Rock, is located in downtown San Francisco Bay and is known for hosting up from 1943-1963 the famous federal prison which became famous criminals as Al Capone. During its 29 years of operation no prisoner escaped although 36 prisoners tried. Its location, as well as strict security measures made it a high security prison. Currently the jail remains in the same state it was left in 1963 and you can visit their site, which is now a museum that explains what it was like jail, what have been the most famous prisoners who have been through it and narrate some of the most striking episodes as the "Battle of Alcatraz", of May 2, 1946, in which six prisoners attempted to escape and ended with the death of several inmates and prison staff, and flight March 1962 prisoners believed to subsequently drowned in the cold waters in their attempt to reach the bay swim but today have not yet found their bodies. There is also a museum on the history of the island, before installing the prison, which was a military barracks. ' http://www.nps.gov/alca/index.htm'

I suspected that my short stay on Alcatraz Island would not be more happy, but at this point! Once the foot is placed on the dock of the island, one is struck by the sad and dreary prevailing ... The buildings are crumbling and cracked, the weeds grow everywhere, the wind violent atmosphere. You almost want to take the boat, but not the prison is indeed closed, so there is no risk. We climbed the path that leads to the "museum" in the former prison. One enters the queue installed in the "lobby" where we see the room containing the clothes received the prisoners on their arrival. The stage is set. We are given an audio guide and the tour starts! Each pilgrim at the mercy of information and anecdotes. I'm not a fan of audio guides, but this one is really well done. This is one of the prison guards who welcomes us and tells us life in prison. For more "realistic" reconstructions (audio) report significant events for prisoners, as the prison staff. Of realism and troubling. Finally, it was a very rewarding afternoon, but I was not unhappy to return to San Francisco. Remember to take your tickets in advance on the internet (' http://www.nps.gov/alca/') and plan a half-day trips between the ferry and visit.

There are more than 45 years ago, the famous high-security prison was closed and turned into a historical site, which is still open to visitors today. 33 from the pier (Pier 33), a ferry across the Bay of San Francisco to get to Alcatraz island tours are offered throughout the year. 4 types of tours are offered: Early Morning, day, night, and visit the prison accompanied by an Angel Island visit. The night tour remains the most comprehensive, available exclusively with evening activities (such as projections, among others, Al Capone or a demonstration of closed cell doors still impressive). All visits are made in the form of audio guide (track 45 minutes) and takes us into the world of the prison, including the testimony of former guards, prisoners or the granddaughter of the lighthouse keeper . The night tour can also enjoy a magnificent view of the city from the center of the bay, and day and night.

Before becoming a federal prison from...

Before becoming a federal prison from 1934 to 1963, the island has long been a military fort from which controlled the entry of any kind of boat to San Francisco Bay. Among its most famous prisoners, we find Alphonse "Sacrface" Capone or George "Machine Gun" Kelly. Several companies Guided tours on "The Rock", but I seriously recommend making the Alcatraz Cruises (Pier 33) since for the same price as the others is the only one that really step on the island (the other surrounding only island ...). Once on the island, using headphones you get (included in price) will narrate a very entertaining history of the old prison as you walk through it. We paid off the $ 26 of each ticket and the travel time you choose, and you can hop on the ferry when you want to return (every 30min). Believe it or not, this island annually attracts over 1.3 million visitors, is a national park since 1972 and before that was occupied by an indigenous community in protest against the American government.

U.s. only barren rock can have so muc...

U.S. Only barren rock can have so much history and symbolism. Feared by some and idealized by others, Alcatraz is a place that will not allow you to visit impassive. Here episodes have occurred and that are part of American history, the rise of American Indians in the seventies and various escape attempts, bloody and there is no evidence of success (not failure). It closed in 1963 and its use as a military fortress passed, military prison and federal prison. Now a National Park since 1972. His story began as a military fortress and later the U.S. Spanish fortified it to protect access to the bay for the s. Century not only used as a prison during the Civil War. You reach the island on a journey of just over 15 minutes, in one of the cruises that depart from Pier 33. When you reach the island should pick an audio guide (which is free), so follow the path of history.

This year i went for the third time i...

This year I went for the third time in my life in San Francisco. But curiously, I'd never visited the island of the world's most famous prison. I went alone on the eve of my return to France, and this is the vision that I had of this place completely paradoxical. It exudes both a soothing atmosphere, thanks to the extraordinary natural environment, the variety of birds found here and the magnificent panorama. And on the other hand, a negative energy charged atmosphere of hatred, pain, frustration we feel. My advice, if you need to visit Alcatraz, let by yourself, even if separated from your group to feel really transcend by this place. I could not do the night tour, but I'm sure the atmosphere should be more involved, so if you get the chance ...

A walk through an island-prison histrica

In this video I show a visit to Alcatraz aka The Rock, a great ride on the island of San Francisco and jail stays there. The journey begins by taking the boat at Pier 33 and is recommended to reserve a week in advance to have a decent hour. With the great reception upon arrival, contextualizing all the initial documentary video about Alcatraz Discovery Channel. We can see the corridors as areas known as Broadway and Times Square, which gave names prisoners to remember their hometowns. Something curious is the ability to get inside the cells, and normal to feel a prisoner isolation and get out more common courtyard where minimal enjoyed freedom of movement. The great audiogruía tells the stories of famous inmates such as Al Capone and others escaped or tried, as we show in the video. From the outside in which the officers were you can enjoy great views of San Francisco Bay from the city to the Golden Gate Bridge. Paying for jail time, a great experience, being leisure ;) More videos like this in "my corner minube" and ' http://jantotravel.wordpress.com/'

Do not let go!

One of the recommended visits city is Alcatraz. However, so well that I had spoken and what I had read, I expected much more. However, it is still a visit worth making. What I value very highly is how well it is organized and great explanation of the audio guide, which is included in the price and there in different languages. A took us between the trip back and forth over the visit, about 3 hours. Need to book in advance. Advise wear coat because it's quite windy and the weather is very changeable.

Called the island of pelicans, and located only a few miles from the coast of the city of San Francisco, Alcatraz is the famous prison that is now one of the symbols of the city as well as the Golden Gate or the Transamerica Pyramid. Visible from the port 39 including the island has long hosted one of the most famous prisons in history, and one of which it was the most difficult to escape. I must say that between the icy water, currents, and sharks, prisoners were served! The prison visit, with ferries departing from Port 39, all day. Count 26 dollars and book several days in advance.

Alcatraz always fascinates me ... why? I of course look a few movies and on sries mythical place and even if it parat a little "dark" want to visit a prison, it is a cult. When you think SF is thought to Golden Gate of course but also the Alcatraz. I expected much further away from the coast in fact, but during a trip in the bay we approchs. The buildings are not dlabrs vtustes but not more, do not forget that it closed in 1963, forty years no more.

Alcatraz

Alcatraz Prison, one of the major attractions of the city! And it is not very surprising, visiting this site filled with history is very interesting! You will learn, I am sure a lot about this prison through audio guides provided at the entrance (that is to say in the prison showers!) While visiting the site step by step . I loved visiting this place, so I recommend it!

Alcatraz
