Balcón de Europa

This is probably the most recognized place in Nerja. And it deserves it. It is a spectacular viewpoint that seems to be floating from the top of a precipice while offering unforgettable sunsets.

You could say that it is the “center” of Nerja, since it is where people meet and where tourists and local people come together, where people decide where they are going out that night. Wherever you look you will be amazed: sea, cliffs, beaches…

It is a must see if you are in Nerja.

The Balcón de Europa is a viewpoint that used to be called “La Torre de los Guardas” (the tower of the guards). It is located south from the town of Nerja, in front of the Salón Beach and Calahonda, and it was constructed in the 17th century.

Today, it is an extraordinary window to the sea and the Mediterranean coast, and you can walk there by a tree-lined promenade called Paseo del Balcón de Europa.

There you will find cafeterias, restaurants, ice cream shops, hotels and rides in horse carriages that will take you through the old part of Nerja.

The guns of the old fort that were built in the 9th century are in the same spot that serves as the Tribute to King Alfonso XII, which later was extended in the sixteenth century and were recovered from the sea. In the British War of Independence, the guns were thrown overboard under the pretext of defending the French and set aside while all strong defense near Gibraltar. The place is the Mirador del Balcony, other data of the Tourist Office of Nerja.

Every time we travel to Málaga, where I have a house, we stop in Nerja to enjoy a special walk. To walk along the emblematic streets of Nerja really takes the stress away, especially when you arrive to the Balcón de Europa. To take a look and get lost in the blue of the sea is everything…

I really recommend it, also the beaches, even though they can get quite crowded in the high season.

I repeat: this place is a magical one.

It is the nerve center of Nerja, everyone who goes to Nerja goes there. It has unforgettable views and sunsets. It is a walk over a cliff, the base was a castle for defense, but little remains of it. Alfonso XII gave it this name after visiting the area. It is surrounded by cafeterias.
