The virgin of the macarena

If there is a fellowship with tradition and many faithful in Seville, it is that of Esperanza Macarena and their Basilica, in the neighbourhood of the same name, it’s a must visit.

The basilica is a modern construction and its main interest is the carving of the Virgin Mary it houses in its interior.

It really is beautiful, and its neo baroque altar is a true marvel. Inside the church there is also a museum displaying the jewels of the Virgin Mary and their Holy Week procession.

Temple to visit in seville:

One of the temples which, despite not being in a predominantly tourist area, is a must visit in Seville is the Basilica of the Macarena, even more so during Easter.

It is located in La Macarena neighbourhood, next to the walls and the Puerta de la Macarena. Its exterior does not say much, its steeple like a triumphal arch, is neo-baroque style and was built between 1936 and 1941 by the architect Gómez Millán. It has a single nave with four side chapels. It was proclaimed a minor basilica by Pope Paul VI in 1966, and is see to the royal, illustrious and fervent brotherhood and confraternity of Nazarenes home to the sculptures of: Nuestra Señora del Santo Rosario (Our Lady of the Holy Rosary), Nuestro Padre Jesús de la Sentencia (Our Father Jesus of judgment) and the María Santísima de la Esperanza Macarena Coronada (Crowned Blessed Virgin Mary of La Esperanza Macarena), popularly known as the "fellowship of La Esperanza Macarena."

The importance of this church is on the inside, for its sculptures, especially the Blessed Virgin Mary of La Esperanza Macarena (seventeenth century), so venerated by all from Seville, which presides on the main altar.

The sculpture is not very big but beautiful and dressed with a crown of gold, she has glass eyes, five tears on her cheeks, and an expression as if she were smiling, wanting to convey hope with her gesture, despite the pain.

You can access the Camarín (shrine or chapel set above and behind the High altar in a church) behind the Virgin, and kiss the robe. La Macarena was canonically crowned in 1964, and received the gold medal of the city in 1971.

Other important sculptures in the basilica are: Our Lady of the Holy Rosary (Virgin Mary with the baby Jesus in her arms) and Our Father Jesus of judgment (Christ with a crown of thorns, from the seventeenth century).

In addition, the dome of the church is decorated with frescoes and wall paintings that depict scenes of Mary (mother of Jesus), the mysteries of the rosary and the three theological and four cardinal virtues. In one of the chapels are the tombs of Queipo and his wife, who contributed to the construction of the basilica, and returned the crown of the Virgin Mary, that had been given to the army as a donation.

Next to the Camarín is a door that leads to a small museum (3 € entrance) of the fellowship, where you can see different costumes and robes of La Virgin Macarena.

Next to the basilica access door, there is a store that sells all kinds of souvenirs and estampita (small religious picture) of this virgin.

Pasin sevillana

No, it's impossible to resist. It is not possible not to get excited. Feels faith might not ours, but that of the millions of people who have prayed, I have cried and thanked. The feeling is in the air, pain, love and passion for the Esperanza Macarena you can almost touch, you can even take with him back home. Impress. A lot. Pass the entrance gates, see the penitents lighting the candles on the porch outside and go silent to ask Mother, or thank him for favors received. Silent. Inside, like a jeweler that surrounds most valuable diamond, filled with neo-baroque scrolls and gold, the temple holds the greatest treasure, the image created by the pulley in the seventeenth century and whose beauty moved to Andalusia and millions of faithful, particularly in Latin America. Temple is a very new bill as early as 1949, but it is certainly the ideal setting for the purposes for which it was designed. Fortunately this year, the Brotherhood makes the effort to open to visitors daily chapel. So, be accessible from Monday to Friday from 12 to 13.15 after 11.30 Mass and the recitation of the Angelus, and Saturdays and Sundays from 9-14 pm and 17-20 hours. A unique opportunity to see closer than ever to the Wonder of Wonders, protected in a dressing room with immense artistic value, because not only was made in materials of great value, but incorporates a symbolic reference to the Virgin and the very Seville, as models of the Giralda and Cathedral sustained by angels, the eight Andalusian provinces shields and their patrons, those of the Bourbons and the Seville itself, the Brotherhood, the Litany to the Virgin, painted by flowers or delicate diamonds lining the dressing room and they were inspired by the Alcazar. The last privilege that grants us the Macarena, before we go out of its case, is being able to see his profile, thanks to two cornucopia mirrors that reflect all the light of your face. And the Virgin is not alone, though the doors close and carry with them the faithful in their prayers or prayer cards. Here is with who receives the love of human pain, Who soothes shares and with Our Lord Jesus in the Judgment, Felipe Morales Nieto, who is the object of worship since 1654. But the Macarena never alone, nor allow our hearts suffer. She is a mother and a mother only gives Love
