Basse-terre island

Guadalupe Island is formed by two large, butterfly-shaped islands called Grande-Terre and Basse-Terre and joined by a narrow canal called the Riviere Salee. The island of Basse-Terre is on the left side of this butterfly, has an area of 848 km2 and is the largest of the Lesser Antilles. It is a mountainous island of volcanic origin, consisting of steep mountains covered by lush rainforests of tall trees and dense ferns (it is the greenest island in Guadalupe). The central part is formed by the Guadalupe National Park, which is a dense green rainforest, where rivers form wonderful natural waterfalls and cascades. It has been declared a Biosphere Reserve. Another of the most interesting elements of the island is the Soufriere volcano (1,470 m), located in the southern part of Basse-Terre which is still active and regularly emits sulfur fumes. The economy of this area is based mainly on agriculture, including the production of large banana plantations and sugar canes. It is also the administrative capital of Guadalupe although the largest city and economic capital is Pointe-à-Pitre, which is situated on the Riviere Salee, at the place where Basse-Terre and Grande-Terre meet. It is a truly wonderful place to visit.
