A Beautiful Medieval Village

One of the excursions you can do if you visit close to Rome is the small town of Bolsena, located on the banks of the largest lake in Italy. The first remains found at the site date back to the Iron Age. The old city is surrounded by a great wall of tufa that is approximately 4 kilometres long and was initially built by the Etruscans and continued by the Romans. There is also a hilltop castle you can visit, the castle of Rocca della Monaldeschi Cervera, which dates from the 12th century.
