Castle de Villeneuve

Villeneuve lez Avignon is a town in the region of Gard, formerly known as Saint André Villeneuve. It is next to the Rhone River, just across from Avignon. Andaon Mount is a hill overlooking the city and was a historically strategic geographical position to build a fortress many years ago. The Fort San Andres was built in 1292. There was an abbey on the Mount from 980 and a small town had sprung up around it. The King of France wanted the castle of St. Andrew to provide protection for the papal city of Avignon. Then, Avignon was the center of the Catholic religion and the Popes had built a lovely palace there.
