Cathedral of Saint Trifon

The Cathedral of Saint Tryphon, despite its baroque towers and facades and being rebuilt after the earthquake of 1667, is one of the oldest churches in Europe and the oldest of the former Yugoslavia. Its romanic beginnings date back to 1166 when it was built on the sie of on a previous ninth century church. St. Tryphon, with the Blessed Hosanna is Kotor's patron Saint. He was martyred defending the faith and is a saint highly revered by the Orthodox Church. The city came into possession of the relics of the saint in the third century, his head, when a merchant ship entering the city in the year 890 gave it to the city.
