Cecilio Rodriguez Rose Garden

Retiro Park’s rose garden

One of the many nooks to explore while you’re wandering around Madrid’s massive Parque del Retiro is Cecilio Rodríguez’s rose gaden.

Even if you’re from Madrid, it’s possible that you’ve never found this nook, as it’s not the easiest to find. It’s located in the southern part of the Retiro, somewhat off the beaten parth of the normal tourist sites in the Retiro, like the pond.

This garden has been full of roses since 1915, when they decided to follow the prevailing trend in other European cities and create a rose garden in Madrid. It was completely destroyed during the Spanish Civil War, but was reconstructed afterwards and repopulated with thousands of roses.
