Historic area

Located in the Midlands , this area was once where the headquarters of the Kings of Ireland was located. It is one of the most historic counties of the island, and has an overwhelming array of sites to see. It is known for being one of the first settlements in Ireland. The largest city in the county is Navan, although the city of Trim has technically had more historical significance.

There are many things to see here, but among the most well-know in the areas are Newgrange (declared UNESCO World Heritage Site) and the Hill of Tara, which was used as a headquarters by the Kings of Ireland . With exceptional historical sites dating back to the 3200AC, Meath is a must-see for all who come to visit Ireland. The Place of the Battle of Boyne, one of the most important places in the history of Ireland, marks the setting of the Battle of the Boyne. This battle was fought in July 1690 and was between King William III and his father King James II. The area also contains three megalithic tombs, those of Newgrange, Knowth and Dowth. The Hill of Tara dates back more than 5,000 years ago, during the Neolithic era. Tara is known both in myth and in history as the headquarters for the Kings of Ireland. Trim Castle was considered the largest Anglo-Norman castle in Ireland and its construction began in 1176. Other points of interest are Kells (famous for the book) Slane, Oldcastle, Bective and Athboy.
