Cubo de la Galga Route

First of all, La Palma is a paradise for nature lovers. They say that there´s more than 1,000 km of signaled paths on the island, all of which are very well marked.

If you only have one day, choosing with path to hike isn´t the easiest decision. There are many, and they´re all somewhat different. Each one has something spectacular to offer. I´ve been lucky enough to hike a few of them, and the experience was always marvelous.

The Cubo de la Galga is a spectacular laurel forest, formed thousands of years ago by the trade winds beating into the mountain.

It´s a simple route, with minimum difficulty, that requires no special preparation. You can bring your entire family along. The coolest thing is that, about an hour after starting, you´ll find yourself completely overwhelmed by the enormous tress standing overhead, as you´re surrounded by spectacular-looking ferns, which give a special touch to this place.

One of the best paths on La Palma is the Cubo de La Galga route, even for kids. It´s just 19 km to the north of Santa Cruz along the Barlovento highway. We took the LP-1 that crosses through the La Galga ravine, after the first tunnel.

To the left, there´s a paved forest road (1 km), and, from that point on, the environment starts to change. The vegetation becomes denser, the views are flooded with the lush laurel forest and ferns. It´s a truly marvelous area.

Easy hiking in one of the lushest areas of La Palma, with a dense laurel forest and huge ferns. You can start the route from the info center on the LP-1 highway, between Puntallana and Sauces, but you´ll have to go along a short paved section. If you start at the Fuente Pino path, you´ll avoid the paved road. You can make the route circular, going up to the Somada Alta lookout point. The vegetation is so dense, you´ll think you´re in the middle of the jungle.

You don’t have to be an expert mountaineer to be able to go deep into this fabulous forest. During the trek, you will feel the magic of the forest, deep green, with the sounds of nature and a unique environment that you will never forget.
