Église Saint Jean-Baptiste

10 reviews of Église Saint Jean-Baptiste

Interesting church

This church is dedicated to St. John the Baptist, patron of the city. It was built on the ruins of another church in the heart of the city that suffered continuous fires during the Spanish invasions. The interior is beautiful with it´s huge wooden gallery very typical of French Basque churches. A wooden boat hangs from the center of the ceiling which reminds us of the importance of united maritime activity to the city. In the year 1660 the royal marriage between Louis XIV and the Infanta Maria Theresa of Austria took place here. Something curious is that the door you entered was sealed, but not the one at the end of the ceremony (as indicated by the plaque on the outside).
