El Cotillo Beach

The island of Fuerteventura is ideal for aquatic sports like windsurf or kitesurf, due to the intense trade winds. We practiced kitesurf in the Lagunas del Cotillo, an area protected from the swell and located 3 km away from the town of El Cotillo, northeast of the island.

It is a virgin white sanded beach, which can be accessed through an unpaved road. It has the shape of a shell and it is protected by the currents (not the wind) by a natural rocky breakwater. When the tide goes down it leaves small puddles. Note: it doesn’t have any stalls, hammocks, etc.

It is found north of the island, and it is, without a doubt, the best one I visited. It is located next to the lighthouse of Tostón, in the region of El Cotillo, and it is made up of small coves, separated by natural walls made of stone, that close the sea and form pools, with calm and crystalline waters, with fine white sand, that contrast with the black volcanic rock.

There are also many small circular walls to protect oneself from the wind, which is the only inconvenience of the island. It is not crowded, there are some swimmers and kitesurfers, which is quite a show. Last, I would
