The City of the Wind

The Medina of Essaouira was declared, by Unesco in 2001 a World Heritage Site. We moved to this city throught the intense heat o Marrakech from Tetouan. But when we arrived at dusk we had to take shelter in a 'sudadera' because the temperature was cool and the wind made the it feel even colder. There is an extremely varied atmosphere in Medina. The colors, the smells, the friendly people, although it can be overwhelming to those ve are not used to this country. Haggling is a very interesting practice which occurs in trade between tourist and sellers. As I was born in Tetuan and I have considerable space covered between the initial price offered and the end paid.

Oasis

After a few days in Marrakech, noisy and chaotic, and after nearly three hours across desert and farmland in an old bus with no air conditioning and surrounded by local people, we got to Essaouira and breathed peace and tranquility. I loved the beauty of its beaches, streets and people. This is the best site I've seen there. People were friendly, and although many are close to poverty, foreigners are not harassed as in bustling Marrakech. Did not try the fish in the harbor, but I could choose what I wanted in a restaurant in one of its streets full of artisans. Exquisite dishes cooked by women there, in their own kitchen.

Essaouira

A quiet and cozy coastal town where time passes slowly. The food is a real pleasure and covers all budgets as does accomodation. The sunsets are the highlight, its Tajines, the peace, you appreciate. You will really appreciate it if you arrive after the hectic pace of Marakech.

North Africa Sunset

Essaouira is a place of music and freedom. North Africa doesn't do rules and regulations, it will impose its charm of desert, sun and ocean! You will feel saddened to leave and will always dream about coming back!
