A fascinating fusion of buildings from different periods

All the mosques in Tunisia pay homage to Ez-Zitouna, the city's main mosque. The building that we can see today is a fascinating fusion of buildings from different periods, with columns and capitals from ancient Carthage, an Ottoman minaret and Zirid domes. Non-Muslims are only permitted to access the central courtyard, from which you can make out the hypostyle hall. However, just from seeing this one, you get an idea of the grandeur of it. Although I personally prefer the smaller and more accessible mosques, it is also good to contemplate those more formal and monumental mosques. A recommended place if you go to the capital.

Strategically located in the heart of the medina (old town) of the Tunisian capital, Tunis mosque is one of princial landmarks of the city, not to be missed. It is usually discovered by chance, at a bend in the winding alleys of the famous central souk in the city, and one can only be impressed by its imposing dimensions. Spread over more than 5000 square meters, it was built in the seventh century AD and have undergone several major changes during its history.

Mosque built after the kairouan, alth...

Mosque built after the Kairouan, although many Tunisians believe this, the Ez-Zitouna wins in years. It was here in this mosque, where, after the second visit you make, I realized that I was a Muslim. The sensaión I had on the first day I walked in it, is not comparable to the change I noticed the repeat visits. It frankly "monumental" both your yard, such as doors giving access to the prayer room, as its minaret, and inside, with the silence that can "cut" is something truly impresioante. We could talk a lot about this Mosque, both as to its importance com such as in accounting for this city, for its history, etc.. I have no words to praise.
