Great views of the Acropolis

Filopappos Hill is one of the best places to visit in Athens because its location offers great views of the Acropolis and some of the most beautiful neighborhoods in the city like Plaka and Monasteraki. The hill is the highest point in the south of Athens and has always played a defensive role in the history of the city, evidenced by the fact that Demetrios Poliorketes built a fort there in 294 BC that had strategic position over Piraeus. It was also where Francesco Morosini planned his bombing of the Acropolis in 1687. Today, it's known as Filopappos hill because of the Philopappus Monument located at its peak, but it was formerly known as the Hill of the Muses, because the tomb of Musaeus (a disciple of Orpheus).
