Great Buddha of Sasaguri

The Great Buddha of Sasaguri (篠栗 の 大仏) is an enormous statue with the image of a reclining Buddha, found in the temple Nanzoin (南 蔵 院). It was, they say, built on the word of a man who promised to build it if you won the bet. He kept his word. Sasaguri is in the province of Fukuoka, so if you find yourself in the area I really recommend that you go to visit the Buddha which, although not as well known as the Todaiji in Nara or Kamakura, is very majestic and striking. The easiest way to get there is to take the JR line from Hakata Sasaguri and get off at the Nanzoin-Mae Kido station (城 戸 南 蔵 院 前).
