1 review of Hailes Castle

The Battle of Otterburn

The Hailes Castle ruins are hidden in the countryside along the River Tyne, which runs along the border with England. This fact means that this castle, built in the fourteenth century, has been exposed to multiple sieges and other attacks. This castle, which shares the name with its owners, the Lords of Hailes, is famous in both history and literature. The medieval ballad "The Battle of Otterburn" chronicles the clashes between two families and Percies Douglas, which took place in this castle. The castle continued to stand in the seventeenth century despite a brutal attack by Oliver Cromwell. Later it became the residence of the Setton family, and in the nineteenth century historical documents indicate that the castle was used as a barn for nearby farms.
