Modern theater

This theater opened in the year 1892. From then until now it is a reflection of the cultural activities of Ferrol. Its outside is the work of renowned architect Rodolfo Ucha Pineiro, author of numerous modernist buildings in the city, and gives the palace building an urban image.

Ferrol modernista - teatro jofre

Recently refurbished, unfortunately there are not many representations as it should.

Located in the Plaza de Galicia, compared to cantons and the central post office.

One of the most emblematic buildings ...

One of the most emblematic buildings of the city and district of La Magdalena is the Teatro Jofre, located in the Plaza de Galicia, in front of the monument to the fallen in Africa, the Puerta del Dique the Military and the post office. Its facade is impressive, made of stone with many large windows. It is accessed by a staircase, where there are several ports under a portico composed of arches, supported on Ionic columns, and above these, different faces or masks depicting the comedy or tragedy. The current facade was built by the modernist architect Rodolfo Ucha Piñeiro (who also designed other buildings in the city, such as Pescadería in 1921, even though the theater was opened before, in May 1892, designed by Faustino Domínguez). The theater took its name from its benefactor, Joaquín Jofre Maristany, and is considered one of the works of theater architecture of the nineteenth century the most important of Spain. In his billboard appears every type of cultural event, theater, film and opera. We could not visit the inside (in those days there was a concert and the entrance was only allowed to musicians), but according to the information and the custodian of the brochure is shaped lock, on three floors, has an excellent acoustics and is decorated in the style of Italian baroque theaters. On the side of the rear facade is the co-cathedral of San Julián, which houses the remains of the patron saint of the city.
