Market hall

This building was opened in 1887 and it was originally meant to be a Market Hall, with the aim of improving the sanitary conditions of the city and free up the old Constitution Square (Praça da República today) where the market took place under the arcades of the Municipal (City Hall). The final version of the project is the adaptation of Antonio Silva Meira, highlighting the design of facades which have a neoclassical style and the constructive solutions are mixed, combining stone masonry walls with an iron structure in support of hedges, which were the materials in use at the time of the industrial revolution.
