California's oldest historical society
The Lummis Home & Garden (Los Angeles) was founded in 1883 and is the oldest historical society in California. Its headquarters are found in El Alisal, in the former home of the author, publisher and activist Charles Fletcher Lummis. The south-facing house has intricate stone decorations. In many respects, the main Lummis House represents the beginning of the Arts and Crafts aesthetic.
