Marvao

Marvão is a medieval village in Portugal. It is located on the border close to Valencia de Alcantara, Cáceres. It is a very quiet town, located on top of a mountain, where the views are wonderful. You can see it from the road, it's amazing. Originally arable, every year there is the festival of Al-Mossassa where its Islamic origins are remembered. The festival runs from October 1 to 5.

Marvao

This is a spectacular castle superbly maintained, in a wonderful location. It is very close to Spanish border. The villa is completely walled. It is beautiful, this place is a feast for the eyes and soul.

Marvo route.

This small walled medieval town has a castle on top, is situated on a mountain of Alentejo, at 825 m. altitude, and is part of the Sierra P.Natural S. Mamede, near Valencia de Alcántara and Portalegre. We visited during our road biker Atlantic Bético 2011 to sleep and dine in the restaurant hospederia (El Rei Dom Manuel ****), located within the walls, serving dishes Alentejo, although in our opinion, will spare 2 ** by high demand and price rooms and the "vision" of those responsible uncommercial. The white and Marvão preserved architecture, along with the tranquility of its few inhabitants, only see "amanazada" every quarter of an hour by the church bell that gives time signals and quarters 24 h. day. From his castle and ramparts have magnificent views of the entire region.

Marvão was the first city I encountered when passing the south western border of Portugal by Spain to Valencia de la Sierra. And what more beautiful place! It is interesting to see how almost all Portuguese cities that border Spain are walled and with a fortress on top. It is also logical, of course! But the truth is that draws attention. Marvão stands out especially for its castle and the wall surrounding it. Go to Marvão implies imagine what happened there other times. And even now, so many years after its splendor, still worth it! The view you have from the top of the wall is fantastic!

I did a little tour of Portugal, and it was a good experience, villages, cities, landscapes ... Gives you the feeling you've traveled to the past, as if the clock had stopped, everything you see is connected to the past and the future, and is preserved very well. Frozen In Time ...

Parado no tempo...
