Unique market

The Valencia Central Market is curious, unique and beautiful (as many markets) in its tradition and architecture. Take a walk around here and see both the building itself, as well as the stalls and their disposition, it is a good way to pass the time.

The Central Market emerged in the Arabic Valencia, around the mosque ... much later, between the sixteenth and eighteenth centuries it was a place for joust and equestrian tournaments... The current building is from the early twentieth century, the building is made of iron, glass and ceramics, and the central dome reaches 30 meters. The stalls are well organized ... fish and meat account for nearly half, followed by the deli and greengrocer, leaving a central part for spices, bakery and dried fruits. Everything looks very good indeed! There are still stands to be found outside to the sides of one of the main entrances, as if the market did not want to be locked in.

My favorite market

Out of all the markets I’ve seen in Spain and Europe, Valencia’s central market is without a doubt my favorite. Its 100 year old modernist building is located in the center of the city, in front of the Lonja and the Santos Juanes church. It’s become a place of reference for tourists in the city and is packed every day with vendors and visitors alike. There’s just about anything you can imagine inside, with quality and incomparable products.

In addition to its architectural beauty, it’s the daily bustle that will really grab your attention. There’s also many stands around the market that sell items. Coming to Valencia and not going to the market means you haven’t really visited the city.

Beautiful with a traditional touch

It is a beautiful building located in the Plaza del Mercado (Market Square), not far from the Silk Market, a very nice pedestrian area. It is a modernist-style building and was built in 1914, with the help of architect Alexandre Vial and Guadiana i Soler. Both were employees of the famous Catalan architect Domenech i Montaner.

The market was restored in 2004, and now looks beautiful. Inside there is a large central dome which lets in plenty of light, everything is very organized and clean, but it still preserves a touch of the traditional market. The building is a mixture of a metal structure that looks very heavy, with stained glass windows.

You can find anything, fish, meat, fruit and vegetables, but also typical regional produce. On the outside there are small stands built into the walls of the market, they often sell pans for paella and other products needed for traditional Valencian dishes.

The market is open Monday to Saturday from 7.30 am to 14.30.

Valencia's best market

The Mercado Central in Valencia is, without a doubt, the city's best market, and a heaven for foodies and curiosity-seekers. First of all, the building is gorgeous, and it's loaded to the brim with everything from salted shark meat to Spanish hams to fresh fruit juices. The nice thing about the market is that it's divided into sections (veggies, meats, cheeses, fish, etc.), so it makes shopping a bit easier than in some of the "wild west" markets in other cities. Also, many of the fruit vendors sell fresh-squeezed juices on ice which go down nice on a hot, muggy Valencian day.

Architecture combination of good products

Its luminous dome stands out from any angle is observed. The architecture of the building has been restored and preserved flawlessly. Stained glass and decorative paintings are of great simplicity that stand in the set. The posts estn very clean and tidy, offering all kinds of products, without ostentation, with kindness and simplicity. You can taste meals prepared cheaply and well served (the weight). Some positions such as ceramic artisans Manises offer a good alterntiva to bring memories of the place. If the heat views one day you should certainly try the frozen horchata, refreshing drink, made with water, sugar and groundnuts, tubers pequeos shaped knots that come from the roots of the sedge countersunk (yellow nutsedge), called as for the shape of its fruit, like hazelnut.

The cathedral of commerce

Market Square has been since the Middle Ages an influential commercial use. This is the place where Valencian traders set up their stalls from time immemorial. In the early twentieth century, decided to build a covered market for these traders, thus, between 1910 and 1928 was built the Central Market, which is one of the leading examples of Art Nouveau in Valencia. Iron architecture, stained glass and ceramics that represent the richness of the Valencian huerta. On the roof, a weather vane depicting a cockatoo has become the symbol of the market. Considered the second largest covered market in Europe. It is a spectacle browse its aisles filled with stalls, funny and colorful, fish and seafood, fruit and vegetables, meat, sausage and all kinds of other products.

Art and gastronomy.

'm Valencian, and I like to share the places, in my humble opinion, represent the best of Valencia. One of them, besides the well-known City of Arts and Sciences, is the Central Market. It is a building that combines functionality and art. Art Nouveau, walk outside and, above all, for its interior, stimulates creative vein of any photographer and awakens the senses, especially sight and smell, while the stomach begins to stir enjoying the delicacies that appear front. Admire the architecture, domes and stained glass, and come out step with the purchase made. You will eat healthier than any hotel or fast food restaurant, I assure you!

I do not know about you, but i, when ...

I do not know about you, but I, when I visit a new country or a new city, I like to discover its market. It is always at the first place I visit. I love the smells, see the traditional foods of the city or region. I always seem to discover the wealth of a city, the heart of its people through its market. I was not disappointed by the central market of Valencia. It is very beautiful and very traditional. I could discover, buy and taste local specialties too. Once out of the market, you can take the opportunity to explore the Lonja is right in front of the Mercado Central. You will see this is a very nice building to visit.

Worth

The Central Market of Valencia is located near the Silk Exchange. Worth watching if only for outside because the building is very nice. When I visited was the whole area around works, so marred somewhat, but nevertheless quite liked. Inside you can find all kinds of meats, with an excellent pint. The fruit called special attention, along with selections of cheeses, wines and pates.

Modern

Modernist building is a great project which began in 1914, but until 1928 the market was not opened. It has ground floor and basement with recessed columns and brick vaults. Inside (which certainly could not visit) there are two broad ways in which are located the 959 seats. The walls are covered with tiles on the floor, and also has stained glass windows, favoring the light, and from these the domes and various parts of the roof, from inside.

Modernista

Central market - el mercado central i...

Central Market - El Mercado Central in Spanish - is a remarkable construction of the magnificent city of Valencia. It is located not far from the Lonja de la Seda. This Modernist building was built between 1914 and 1928 by the architects Alejandro Soler and Francisco Guardia. The building of more than 8000 m² surface is a point of sale of food: fruit, meat, seafood and much more. This market impresses with its beautiful architecture I have been particularly impressed by its facade adorned with mosaics.
