Monument to the Drowned

The Monument to the Drowned or "Man Emerging to Life," as its author, Mario Irrazabal, originally called it. He's the Uruguayan artist who sculpted it in 1982. It's located on stop #4 of the Playa La Brava metro and it's a sculpture composed of five fingers partially submerged and emerging from the sand. It's a symbol of Punta del Este and was intended to be a warning to swimmers and surfers, especially in La Brava because the Atlantic Ocean has high waves that tend to be very strong. The fingers were constructed primarily of plastic reinforced with iron bars and metal grating and solvent resistant to erosion.
