San Sebastian de la Gomera Old Town

1 review of San Sebastian de la Gomera Old Town

A historic quarter

The old quarter of San Sebastian de la Gomera is very small, no more than about four or five streets that existed in the fifteenth century. When Christopher Columbus went on his way to the Americas with his ships, he walked these streets, stayed in these houses, and refueled his ships, replenishing his supplies for two months at sea. The old centre is organised around the harbour, between Calle Ruiz de Padron and Guatealupe Virgin. Among the buildings of interest that are from the time of Columbus, there's the tower and the washing well, where it's said that Columbus collected enough water for his entire trip, which he later used to baptise America.
