Palace of the popes

The route is quite spacious with a good audio guide. It was very good even though it´s almost empty. But you are not allowed to take pictures inside or videotapee. At the exit there is a kind of small winery where you can buy wines with Chateauneuf-du-Pape as the Popes were fond of these.

Being in the beautiful city of avigno...

Being in the beautiful city of AVIGNON the tour de force is to visit and enjoy the famous Papal Palace (Palais des Papes) where unwrapped an interesting episode in the history of the Catholic Church. This immense building in addition to its historical value, is an impeccable example of European medieval Gothic architecture, and was designated a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 1995. There are several palaces in Europe Papal Avignon and papal seat was used in 1309 AD, when Pope Clement moved the headquarters to France, fleeing the violent atmosphere of Rome. The old palace is located to one side of the Rhone river, on a small hill in the old city walls. It is extremely large it covers an area of over 15, 000 square meters which makes tired the visit, in addition to up and down the many stairs and walk the endless corridors. Only part of the Palace is open to tourists and some of the walls you can see frescoes dating from the 14th century. By looking at some of their roofs can see that they are original and are in good condition. Opposite the palace is the vast Palace Square and also some of its rooms have been converted into the Convention Center. Also in this area is the famous Avignon bridge the Rhone, of great architectural beauty, which crosses the river of the same name. In one day you can visit all these attractions and enjoy a French history lesson.

About the palais des papes, the diari...

About the Palais des Papes, the diarist French Froissart described him as "the most beautiful and most fortified mansion of the world", and who can blame him?! This beautiful Gothic palace, which seems to come from a natural rocky outcrop, stands on the square where you stand even the archbishop's palace Petite Palais, the church of Notre Dame des Doms and the Hotel des Monnaies. The construction of this palace was started in the 30 years of the fourteenth century at the behest of Pope Benedict XII, instead of the old episcopal palace, and was later extended by various popes who succeeded to the papacy during the period of exile in Avignon, in which the seat Pope was moved from Rome to Avignon. Open every day, the Palace of the Popes is largely open: From the audience, where they gathered the hearers of the Court of the Sacred Apostolic Palace, go up until you reach the terrace of the dignitaries where you can enjoy a splendid view of Avignon, on the Rhone and the hills of Villeneuve lez Avignon. If the decoration of these environments has been mostly lost, there are some whose walls the frescoes of the fourteenth century, it is so for the Chamber of the Pope, entirely decorated with plant shoots, and for the House of the Deer whose name derives from the representation a scene of deer hunting.

When you enter the palais des papes, ...

When you enter the Palais des Papes, the first impression you have is this large fully enclosed, very formal courtyard and immediately imposed respect. Popes moved to Avion and had for several centuries the seat of the Catholic church in the city. The King of France was not very happy to have this state in the state and then the Popes palace instead of a fortress built more well take refuge in case of attack. You can see up on your right the chapel and the great portal, which can be reached by a staircase. But first the visit takes you in front in the lower part of the palace where silver, gold is hidden, and even the Popes Tenan a strong fourth refuge. The palace entrance costs 13 euros and allows you to visit the neighboring St Bnezet bridge, which reserve access to the palace from the residence of Villeneuve, the other side of Rdano. Both are UNESCO world heritage.

The city of avignon in provence is fu...

The city of Avignon in Provence is full of historical monuments. Indeed besides, the Avignon Bridge contines of our childhood, you can visit the Palais des Papes. The latter is the largest Gothic palace in the world, the city being at that time the capital of Christendom. There are also the walls that surround the city, but their access is limited, given that the walls also allow you access to Benezet Bridge (Pont d'Avignon said) and whose visit is on average a total of 30 minutes.

Also known as the city of the popes, ...

Also known as the City of the Popes, Avignon city can boast of an eventful history. In XIV, she greeted in effect for nearly 100 years the various popes, taking the symbolic role that previously occupied by Rome. The Popes, wanting to feel good but also to be protected from possible attacks were built in the course of their various kingdoms this magnificent medieval fortress. What impresses even today, it is the excellent state of preservation of the monument, including the visit fun and interesting, is therefore required in a discovery of the city.

Pontifical residence

One of the most marked by papal history cities, Avignon offers the largest Gothic accomplishing ever built at that time. The Rocher des Doms, the palace was built between 1335 and 1352 under the pontificates of Benedict XII and Clement VI. From the outside we already appreciate the immensity of facades and architectural work done but the tour of the interior transports us back in time. Although not much left, a room we go to the other, each of which tells the story of the palace.

Noon in avignon

Heaven there are many, like crosses, palaces and interesting places. But when you find a magical place you need to save. At this time he joined it all: a huge sun, clear blue skies, a special place as the Papal Palace in Avignon, in the upper part and a great company. Luckily I had the camera handy.
