Capturing cuenca's atmosphere

Cuenca's Plaza Mayor is one of the most beautiful and monumental squares of the city: the nerve center of its upper part, the central space of urban life, a perfect place to take a break on the route through Cuenca and to have a drink on one of the terraces. It is a great place to grasp the atmosphere of the city and to observe its most important architectural works.

It is also one of the best places to buy traditional craftwork of the area as well as gastronomic products. On the Plaza Mayor you can find the City Hall, a Baroque style building built in the time of Charles III and that has three round arches of the year 1762, the Convento de las Petras (Petras Convent) and Our Lady of Grace Cathedral(Nuestra Señora de Gracia) of the 12th century. Moreover, adjacent to the Cathedral lies the Episcopal Palace where you can find the Diocesan Museum.

A must see, if possible, during the week

Possibly, as a whole, is one of the most beautiful squares in Spain in which we can take a bath historical culture, architecture, popular cuisine, ... If you stand with your back to the convent of the Petras eighteenth century Baroque with a source attached to the facade that, unless it is too early, we would encourage drinking spout, leave to our left the Cathedral of St. Mary and St. Julian, with its neo-Gothic staircase and facade. In front of the City Hall, a baroque, and both sides of apartment buildings with their facades decorated different and bright colors. When we arrived, at ten o'clock in the morning one day in late September, we sat in one of the many terraces for breakfast. You can not imagine what it means for someone to come to the capital to sit there with a coffee and churros at the table, surrounded by history, with very little traffic (is limited) and the righteous pedestrians. Must be seen and must be done, if possible during the week.

The "Piazza Maggiore", the main square, many features of Cuenca reflects the spirit of the city: First, it is a square of irregular shape, almost trapezoidal, as well as the entire historic center of Cuenca is moving on a plant meandering and uneven. Then mixes of different style buildings, the Town Hall, the Cathedral, and the typical houses with colorful facades. The square was called in the past Piazza di Santa Maria, in reference to the cathedral, and was later the Market Square, with clear reference to the chaotic crossroads merchant that housed.

Cuenca, historical and heritage site....

Cuenca, historical and heritage site. Plaza Mayor is one of the most charming places I recommend to visit at least once ... but personally after going so many years never ceases to amaze and impress me.
