Traditional portuguese customs

I have always enjoyed visiting Portugal and this summer, I had the opportunity to visit a town in the north near Galicia with a long history. It's a small town with an older section that is surrounded by walls. It´s located on the banks of the River Lima (or Limia) which is crossed by a Roman bridge. It´s worth strolling through the streets where you´ll see some very traditional Portuguese customs among the multitude of statues and figures. I also recommend eating at one of the restaurants and enjoying the local cuisine.

Ponte lima

Ponte de Lima is one of the oldest towns in Portugal and as witnessed numerous medieval buildings from the Roman and medieval bridge, through which the Camino de Santiago, to the remains of its walls, very well preserved, and their church . Bathed by the river Lima is a legend that the Romans did not think that was haunted crossed and doing lose memory, but their commander, Decimus Junius Brutus went to the other side, and was calling one by one by their names soldiers, to prove it was a lie. A highly recommended place to visit.

Ponte lima

Rio lethes

This river was nicknamed "Lethe" by Strabo, and fabled profusely in Greco-Roman mythology as the river of forgetfulness. Mythology and geography crossed a historic moment, in 138 BC, when the Roman general Decimus Junius Brutus comprises to break the myth, since the river prevented the progress of its military campaign in the region. He crossed the Lima if, on the other side, called his soldiers one by one by their names. His soldiers were terrified by the fact that its general keep the memory, then crossed the river without fear, limping Lethes the myth.

Rio lethes

As already remarked in section of the...

As already remarked in section of the medieval town of Ponte de Lima, where of course, there is much to see, although it is a small town. Among other things, beyond the river Lima passing by beautiful medieval bridge, a number of churches and monuments that are worth highlighting as the monument to Cardinal Saraiva (1766-1845), the statue of Queen Maria Teresa and her son Afonso, and the Palace of the Marquis, the Mother Church and several other churches as the Mercy and other chapels, Toro, recently opened in May 2008. I recommend a visit to the Botanical Gardens which is a beautiful theme park.

Ponte de Lima is a small town of rustic architecture situated in a broad valley from the river Lima. It belongs to the district of Viana do Castelo, and is considered the oldest town in Portugal. The Portuguese celebrate a great fair on the banks of the Lima River and occupies almost the entire city. In this great city have everything: restaurants, monuments, squares, such as the Palace of the Marquis, museums, and a large theme park which is like a botanical garden, located across the Rio Lima by a large and beautiful medieval bridge, so as a beautiful ancient church and Arco.
