Principal Theatre

The Theatre Principal de Palma, is on Riera Street. The building was built where the old Casa de les Comedies used to be. The theater was inaugurated in 1857 and during its 1st year it was called the Princess Theatre. On June 3, 1858 Macbeth premiered with Verdi's music too, which was very well received, but after the 5th performance, there was a terrible fire that destroyed almost the entire theater, except for the front and side walls. The shock was so great, that they immediately began rebuilding, by the same architects and decorators. In 2 years the work was completed and the theater was renamed the Prince of Asturias Theatre until 1868.
