On the street Vital Carles, that leads to Saint André Cathedral and Pey Berland, this historic building has now become the land army headquarters for the region. Military decisions for the region of Aquitaine were made in this location. General Charles de Gaulle, upon hearing that the new government would ask for an armistice, decided to surge on with the allies, and refused to hand over the territory to the Germans in this very building on June 16, 1940, and on the 18th he delivered his famous radio message, known in London, to all Frenchmen, urging them to not surrender.
