Taking the metro in Rome can be useful if you stay away from the center, since its route (look at it on their website) bypasses all the historical sights. A single ticket costs 1 € and allows you to make a bus transfer too. One may also purchase a ten-journey discount, which is much cheaper than buying a ticket every time.
