Lively merchant street
The rue du Sauvage, or Wild Street, is called in the Alsace dialect Wildemannsgass. The dialect is similar to German, since it is near the border. It's a merchant street and lively. It begins in the Place de la République and reaches the Porte Jeune, surrounding the pedestrianized part of the town. It's animated, but only during the day, at 6 pm everyone goes home! It's the same throughout the region, more so in winter. There are national chain clothing franchises, restaurants, sandwich shops, optical shops, but also small businesses from 50 years ago that are still there and dynamic. They sell fruit, vegetables, bread and typical regional products.
