Castle of the Villa of Salses

The Castle of the Villa of Salses was built between 1497 and 1503 by Ramirez, who used as a direct reference designs of the castles of Castile. Due to this it is set deep in the ground and uses the bulwark construction. It is on the northern edge of the Catalan-speaking territories. In 1258 the border between the Kingdom of Aragon and the Kingdom of France was established between Salses and Leucate. The construction of the new castle was ordered by King Ferdinand in order to reinforce the border of Catalonia against the kingdom of France. In 1642 it finally managed to control the strength. The tour of the castle is a must for anyone travelling through the Mediterranean motorway towards either Paris or Italy; it is a more than justified break or an unmissable point of interest during a visit of Roussillon.
