10 reviews of Museo de los Concilios y de la Cultura Visigoda

Incredible hidden gem

The Museo de los Concilios y la Cultura Visigoda is one of the most amazing and criminally-unknown places to visit in Toledo. Seriously: after having visited some of the city’s more famous landmarks like the Cathedral, I can say that few left me as completely blown away as this museum.

The museum is located in located in the 13th-century Iglesia de San Román, a medieval church built over a pre-existing Mosque in the Spanish Mudejar style (a Moorish-influenced style popular in Spain in the period after the Reconquista). As it was once a mosque, the interior is filled with massive Caliphate-style arches reminiscent of those in the Mosque of Cordoba and gorgeous stucco work. However, the highlight are the murals. I’ve never seen anything like it in Spain.
