In the walled enclosure of what was the Castelo Branco or the Templarios, is the Church of Santa Maria do Castelo. It was built on the remains of a Roman temple in the thirteenth century and was the first church in the area, originally its Iglesia Matriz. In the nineteenth century it was rebuilt and after many military episodes it was almost completely destroyed. After the revolution of 1640 and the fire in 1704, the left side of the church that had an altarpiece for animals disappeared.
