The bronze sculpture on a granite pedetal is located inside the historic Melgaço. It dates from the 20th century, specifically in the 90's, and its sculptor was the artist José Rodriguez. In the year 1388, the legend says that the independence of Portugal was urged to be consolidated, so lands, cities and fortresses were reconquered. In Melgaço, within the walls, the garrison was prepared to defend against the claims of Master Aviz, who was imposing Castilian rule on the residents. Among the inhabitants, there was a Portuguese woman who defended her country from the Spaniards, and who was therefore considered a 'renegade'.
