Sv Jovan Bigorski Monastery

1 review of Sv Jovan Bigorski Monastery

An essential stop between Ohrid and Tetovo

This monastery is located at N 41 ° 37.195 'E 20 ° 36,560'. It was built there in 1020 when it San Juan Bautista appeared where the church now stands. A young monk with long black hair and beard, who spoke perfect English showed us the inside. He explained the more than 500 human and 200 animal figures, a job that took artisans five years to complete, from 1830-1835. He opened a sort of locked trunk with remnants from the True Cross and relics or bones of six saints, including Santiago and San Juan Bautista. Imagine the devotion with which he treated the chest and how many times he crossed himself. Outside, we met a girl from Kosovo who had lived in Spain. She explained to us that she was going to stay overnight and have dinner at the monastery. She commented that it was free to stay in all the monasteries, although they ask you to bring food to share and an alms or a donation for any reconstruction or maintenance.
