Swiss re tower

The Guerkin tower, as it is popularly known for obvious reasons, is officially called 30 St Mary Axe and is located in the City of London's financial district. It is a spectacular building, both day and night when it is illuminated. Many people compare it to the Agbar Tower in Barcelona for its similarity. You can see it like this from all over the city. It was designed by British architect Norman Foster. It is 180 meters high and opened its doors in 2004. Its interior can be visited only once a year in September: Www.Openhouse.Org.Uk).

On 30 St Mary Axe is a building in London's financial district. Also known as the Gherkin, the Swiss Re tower, or Swiss Re building Its 180 meters high making it the 2nd tallest building in the City of London, after Tower 42, and the sixth in all of London. Design is the great Norman Foster, Ken Shuttleworth and Arup engineers. The building was constructed between 2001 and 2004. The Gherkin nickname, very popular, and were literally means pickle editors from The Guardian who coined the term "Erotic Gherkin" when they unveiled plans for the building on the site, which originally was to have 370 meters and a plant of 90,000 m2. Although the plan was abandoned, most people do not know that the official name of the building is 30 St Mary Axe. Another nickname is Crystal Phallus (Christal Phallus) because of its phallic shape, with Torre Agbar building that bears much resemblance and which also have nicknames sexual aspect. Its first occupant, a global reinsurance company, Swiss Re Tower named him, although it was never official or widespread. The building is smart and is designed to save energy and preserve the environment, among its features are: - uses 50% less energy than a standard office building - systems has natural lighting and ventilation - features passive solar heating - It is constructed from materials that are recycled Although the building has a curved shape, only one piece of curved glass throughout the building, which is the dome of the top floor, the 40th, in which there is a bar and you can enjoy a 360 degree view of London. While most of the buildings of these features are on the top floors of machinery for the elevators, the Gherkin was not possible because the bar was designed from the start. The architects made the main lifts just arrived to the 34th floor, then there are other elevator from the 34th floor to the 39th. There is a marble staircase and a lift for disabled that reaches the 40th floor bar.

Known worldwide as "the Gherkin" ("the ghuerkin" in English) is one of the most distinctive skyscrapers of London trying to stop being the traditional London we all hope. Cons its 40 stories tall, Norman Foster has built what is now the headquarters of Swiss Reinsurance Company of Zurich, a powerful insurance company Helvetia is inside. The building is not only a masterpiece of architecture, but also excels in technical aspects such as passive heating from solar energy or natural ventilation system, which can save a lot of energy ... Thus, in 2004 won the prestigious architecture prize "Stirling Prize." We may recall the famous Agbar tower in Barcelona but have nothing to do: The first tower was built in British and it is noteworthy that the structure of the Foster tower is metallic, while the French architect Jean Nouvel is wall concrete. It has also been very critical of the impact generated by the Torre Agbar in Barcelona profile, while in a low key London skyline.

Skyscraper shaped cetriolone!

We admired from the top of the column or The Monument from the top floor of Tower Bridge but I suggest you also get right up to power from the bottom up and see the reflection of the surrounding buildings !!! Completed in 2004, this high-rise architectural form curious now become a recognizable and indispensable element of the skyline of London! It also appears in several British films and American! Under him there are benches decorated with phrases on which you can rest and drink a beer that you can buy in the bar which is located right in the vicinity!

Appare inoltre in diversi film inglesi e americani!

This fantastic building great architect Norman Foster was the first to break the silhouette of low buildings in London. London symbol of the future, which already looms against the sky with many new skyscrapers, the Gherkin tower (which means pickle) was built in the heart of the City of London and is 180 meters high, spread over 40 floors. The monumental work was completed and opened in 2004.

A pickle 180 m

This 180m-high Gherkin originally had the name "Swiss Re" but now called "30 St Mary Axe", the address where it is located. It is a 40-storey skyscraper, part of the skyline of London from 2004, and financial center. It is seen from several London sites even from the domes of the London Eye. But if you want to "touch", the closest subway stops are: Aldgate, Bank and Liverpool Street. As a note, it is interesting that although the shape is curvilinear, only one piece of curved glass in the building.

When we were in London we had it as a reference, which was right next to the apartment we rented. It is striking for its modern style in the great city of London, Traditional.

The swiss re tower by norman foster, ...

The Swiss Re Tower by Norman Foster, is popularly known as "The Gherkin" (the Gherkin) and there is a great divide in terms of the aesthetics of the building, both detractors and defenders. Located next to the Tower 42 of Colonel Seifert's, at the time of its construction the highest in London and is 200 m high. It is easy to see from many places in the city, but if you go to the place where it is located, you wonder who is in a place so small that impacts so surprising yet.

The "big pickle" as called London, is visible from afar! It perceives the Millennium Bridge and from the south bank of the Thames, and from the Tower Bridge.Le evening, it changes color every 15 seconds, a real attraction ;) It is 180 meters high and was built in the early 21th to the Swiss Reinsurance Company.

The gherkin

I consider it a little as the equivalent of the Great Arch of La Defense in Paris. Located in the heart of the financial district of the City, the Gherkin is a bit THE symbol of this area, including its modern architecture and unique. Seen from afar, and the contrast with the old London and its old buildings is saissant.

The gherkin

Pencil, fuse or pickle ...

I translated: pickle, this building was built between 2001 and 2003. Some call it the suppository, others say the buffer. This building makes me think of a rocket that never take off then I do not think so. This is the first ecological skyscraper built in the city. It is 180 meters high. It was built to house Swiss Re, an insurance company.

A discovery, like most things on this...

A discovery, like most things on this trip. A constant reference. In fact, there was a building to call me so special attention but I have to admit that I caught the end to appreciate and when I see now on TV, in a movie or some article on architecture, the memories come to my mind. If you want to see up close the worker's life in the City, jacket and tie, with his knapsack on his back, eating a sandwich sitting next to her job, there is nothing more representative than the surrounding Cucumber Norman.
