The Flying Pole

The Flying Pole is a holiday that's celebrated in Chichicastenango, in the area of Quiché. Every year a lot of tourists come to Chichi to see the famous market on Sundays and Thursdays. They usually depart from Antigua Guatemala or Panajachel. Holidays here are also very interesting, in this town with a lot of great Mayan tradition. The Flying Bat Day is December 21st and on August 15th you'll have the Joyabaj, but it's not as popular. It is a pre-Hispanic dance, which was kept during colonization. The men get into a big stick, leaning on ropes, and dropped slowly in a circular motion. They wear a black suit and a hat with colorful feathers.
