Valeria

Valeria is a tiny village located 35 kilometers from Cuenca and it is surrounded by an important Roman city. This village was founded between the years 93 and 82 BC and has one of the most complete Roman forums in Spain. It is hard to believe that they have very few visitors. The access is free of charge.

To walk through the site is a really stunning experience. Moreover, it is complete with explanatory signs that help picture the city in its moment of glory. Its spectacular landscape also deserves to be mentioned. It allows one to take a peek into the gorges of Gritos and Zahorra rivers from an altitude of about 1,000 meters.

One of the routes we took in Cuenca led us to Valeria. I won't mention the archaeological remains, since you can look it up on Wikipedia, but I want to tell you about its splendid environment.

From the ruins we sighted the gorges of Gritos River, with its typical rock formations. We saw four eagles flying over them (I think they were Bonelli's Eagles). In the village we noticed that some of the doors of the houses were decorated with parts of columns or other archaeological remains. There is also a Romanesque church that we could not visit because it was closed.
