The most dangerous road in the world

I think that whoever named this road had never travelled in the Himalayas or the Karakorum. The road is really pretty dangerous, especially if you have to take the old road if the new one is blocked by landslides. It has become very popular to descend this extreme road by mountain bike. It's a one hour drive through the mountain pass from Paz to Coroico. The passage of the summit is at 4700 meters above sea level, surrounded by huge mountains that are over 5000 meters, and is the main passage between Paz and Yungas (Amazon basin). The route descends 3600 meters in altitude in 64 kilometres, from 4700 meters to the subtropical valleys of the Yungas, passing the villages of Yolosa (1200 meters) and Coroico (1500 meters). Since 1995, it has the honourable title of being the world's most dangerous road, according to the Inter-American Development Bank. The downhill biking is spectacular, although you should not take your eye off the road. The contrast of scenery along the route is bestial, from the eternal snows of the Andean peaks to the extensive subtropical Yungas forests.

Travelling the death road

My experience was amazing. We went down a bike bath some 44kms asphalt and 22kms gravel. The scenery is amazing, with lush vegetation and waterfalls going down the road, you have to pass across rivers, etc. The road is dangerous with many cliffs hundreds of meters high, so you have to stay focused during the descent, in any case I will remember the many animitas and crosses that are along the way. Take a good camera.

If you like the bike, but you do not ...

If you like the bike, but you do not like pedaling: This route is for you! The road descends a vertical drop of 3400 meters, and within a few hours you spend in the alpine cold dampness of the Amazon jungle. This is actually the old road that trucks raced down at full speed, causing a record number of fatalities ... And we understand why! After the first paved section begins the dangerous part: A dirt road, barely wide enough to pass a truck and lined with steep cliffs over 600 meters high! But today, even though 18 cyclists were killed on the road since 1998, down this road bike is a very nice experience, dangerous only if you do anything!

The road of death

The ride to Coroico, a town next to La Paz only worth because we passed the road of death. Some people make the bike ride. I did the same vain. If today was not going to Coroico but would to know the Death Road in Bolivia. We explained that it is the most dangerous road in the world as there are about 7 years old was the only way for that region and the road gave only to spend almost a car at a time, but it was back and forth! And the truck coming at high speed and many have died there. Currently one-way and is already built an alternate path to the back.

It is a unique adventure, from the summit at 4600 meters above sea level sailing the valleys of the Yungas of La Paz.
