No need to go to the top of a skyscraper like the Empire State Building to get a nice view over Manhattan. Just go a little (ok, a lot) ways to the shore of Brooklyn's Williamsburg district and visit the small Grand Ferry park, which you'll find south of South 1st Street for a breathtaking panorama, free of noise and other tourists.
