All about Oaxaca tourism

Oaxaca, also known as Oaxaca de Juárez, is a beautiful and historic city in southern Mexico known for its colonial architecture, ancient ruins, and lovely beaches, all three of which should definitely figure into your Oaxaca travel plans. Flying into Oaxaca-Xoxocotlan airport usually involves a layover in Mexico City, although there are direct flights from the American city of Houston. Now that we've arrived in Oaxaca, let's talk about the best of the best of Oaxaca tourism.

When you visit Oaxaca, you should head to the Zocalo, or main square, and the adjacent Alameda de Leon. These two squares date back to the colonial area and are notable for their palaces, government buildings, fountains, and gardens. Next, consider a walk down the
Macedonio Alcalá Tourist Corridor, a pedestrian-only street that's home to some of the city's best museums and historic churches. Other churches, like the Oaxaca Cathedral are also nearby. One museum you shouldn't miss when you travel to Oaxaca is the
Museum of Oaxacan Cultures where you'll find relics and artifacts from nearby Monte Alban.

Speaking of which, make sure to plan a day trip to Monte Alban during your Oaxaca vacations. Monte Alban was once one of the great city-states of Pre-columbian Mexico and the impressive ruins of this once-great city are now considered a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Exploring the colonial city center and a visit to Monte Alban are usually the most popular activities during most travelers' Oaxaca holidays.

Finally, it should be noted that the state of Oaxaca possesses some truly impressive beaches and you shouldn't pass up a chance to hit the beach during your Oaxaca vacations.
Your best bet is to speak with your hotel and arrange transport to the nearest beaches. This mixture of ancient, colonial, and modern culture (not to mention the beautiful natural setting) is exactly what makes a holiday in Oaxaca special.
