St. George Shoots the Dragon

5 reviews of St. George Shoots the Dragon

Memorial of St. George

August Kiss was the creator of the sculpture of St. George and his memorial. The model was taken to Paris for the Universal Exhibition of 1855, where it won a prize. But the night it was due to come back to Berlin, Kiss died. His widow donated the work to the kings of Prussia, provided it was placed in a suitable location. The statue of St. George and the dragon then sat in the courtyard of the city, until its destruction in the 50s. The palace was damaged by bombings in the Second World War, so it was placed in the park of the Friedrichshain neighborhood. The dragon is very detailed but people criticized the Knight's position, saying it was not natural.
