A 100% Incan Town

This town's name derives from the Quechua word p'isaqa pisaq, meaning partridge, very abundant bird in this area. The new town was built on the very edge of the Urubamba River, and while its ruins are located on the cliffs of the surrounding heights that test the lungs of anyone ve climbs up to them, located more than 3,000 meters in altitude. You must visit Pisaq on its market days, which are Sundays, Tuesdays and Thursdays. On Sunday, the Pisac craft market is quite touristy, and the other two days are pretty local. You can buy carpets, rugs, ceramics and musical instruments. It is one of my favourite places in Peru.

In Inca Fortress in the Heights

Pisac has an absolutely spectacular location between the Andes mountains, the Urubamba and the Sacred Valley. The Pisac ruins are some of the most impressive of the Inca Empire, after Machu Picchu and the Ollantaytambo Fortress. Pisac connects the mountains and the jungle for Inca culture. The ruins stick up and climb the mountainside over 500 meters from the village, and include stairs, carved stone aqueducts, tunnels in the rock, and a strategically located sun temple.

Architectural Inca site

Pisac (also Pisaq) is located 33 kilometres from the city of Cusco, Peru. The archaeological site is one of the largest of the Sacred Valley of the Incas. Situated to the east of the Vilcabamba mountain chain. As was customary in Inca architecture, cities were built based on figurative animals. Pisac was the shape of a partridge, as its name. This area has an Incan section and a colonial section. The main square is a fun place filled with colour and various craft items for sale. There is a well known astronomical observatory here too.
