We arrived directly from Kathmandu airport to the hotel, just outside the city, and there it was more quiet. This hotel, n the language of the people, is pronounced soltil (which means OLD FRIEND). A large hotel has an Italian restaurant!! What a relief after eating so much spicy food. What disappointed me was that they said they spoke 10 languages, one of them being Spanish...nope. The guide told is to eat in a hotel was very cheap, 7 or 9 Euros maximum, but nothing is expensie to eat in the hotel. THey showed us images of the big room, strange bathroom, a shower that was part crystal, and water didn´t even come out.
The Himalayas guesthouse was one of the first to open in Kathmandu in the late 70's; many great travelers have stayed in its spartan rooms, including some of the original American and British hippies. It stands in a side street off Freak Street, where little or nothing has changed in over thirty years. The guesthouse itself is more or less the same. The owner opened another (the Himalayas II) a few years ago on Basantapur Square, with a panoramic roof top restaurant.
I was in this hotel for two weeks in September 2010.
It's situated close to Thamel, away from the hustle and bustle and about 10 minutes from Durbar Square.
It's clean and has a very friendly environment. It has a pretty garden that's ideal to relax. The restaurant is also highly recommendable, as much for it's Nepalese food as for its continental.
Also, there's a good price-quality ratio here.
Without a doubt, I would return to this hotel if I visit Kathmandu again. Very recommendable.

Very cheap Hostel conveniently situated and it cost only 6 euros. Clean, with wifi and breakfast which was cheap and good. We rented a small plane that went to Everest and the Katmandu route at a very cheap price (cheaper than the rest of the hotels), although you have to bargain a little with the owner. They pick you up at the airport for free and take you to the station to go to Pokhara.
This Tibetan hotel is in Lazimpat, the "embassy district", about 7 minutes from the nerve centre of Kathmandu. The rooms are very spacious, clean, and well-equipped. The ensuite bathroom is more than perfect, with a hairdryer. Everyone is really friendly here. Breakfast is delicious, as is dinner.

We booked an evening meal in the Krishnarpan Nepalese restaurant of the hotel. Upon our arrival we removed our shoes, washed our hands and were seated at the low tables with protective aprons. The menu is fixed, we had chosen the 9 course option and were totally stuffed by the end.
The maximum is 22 courses. The dishes were delicious, especially the ceremonial plate, the veg momos and the yogurt flavored with cinnamon and honey. Of course, you also get to eat the ultimate dal bhat which comes with three different types of rice and two pickles. Much of the food served is organic and they have a zero waste philosophy.
On our departure we were given a lucky brick as a souvenir. Booking is required.
Most of the budget lodging in Kathmandu is much more affordable than what you are used to seeing in Europe. The city is divided into zones, with most of the tourist Kathmandu accommodations concentrated in Thamel. There you will find everything from hostels to charming Kathmandu hotels with all modern services to family-run guesthouses retaining the traditional Nepalese character.

We recommend using minube's tools to find and book your room before you go. Don't trust the local agents. It's an unfortunately widespread practice in this area that people will try to sell you rooms at an inflated price and keep a hefty commission for themselves.
