A walled city

Miranda has always been a walled city. The first constructions began during the conquest of the Duero between the 9th and 11th centuries, when a pre-romanesque wall was built. Afterwards came the Castle (13th and 15th centuries), and finally, the modern Barbican (16th to 17th centuries). This Romanesque wall is the first thing one encounters upon entering the old town. An enormous stretch of it, the section along the Douro river across the back of the old Cathedral and the Episcopal Palace until the Trine Frades Jardim has been perfectly preserved.
