Warm and friendly locals

The village of San Andrés Xecul (pronounced shecul) is Totonicapán, 15 kilometers from Xela (short for the city of Quetzaltenango). The church is unique, painted yellow and other bright colors, and saints who seem painted by children. Arriving to Xela is easy, at least until the junction to the village from the main road "American" between Quetzaltenango and Huehuetenango, and then walk a few minutes in the direction of the village. The village is very small, and the locals are warm and friendly. Many tourists visit but they only go to see the church, take a picture and leave. If you stop for a while and talk to them, they will tell you many things about their life, beliefs, traditions and culture. If someone says no, as if they don't to talk to you, it may be an older person who does not speak Spanish! The village also has a market for fruits, vegetables, and a meal prepared by the ladies, it's pretty basic, pupusas and tortillas with beans, fried chicken, but everything is delicious, fresh and cheap. From the church, walk along the streets and talk to people to soak up this cute little town. The church has recently been renovated and so the maybe the locals are still painting it bright colours.
