Museum of Popular Sardinian Traditions and Life

I was really amazed to discover that these were not reconstructions of traditional outfits, but rather the real thing, in perfect condition no less, often dating back to the 18th century. These costumes, though, were certainly not worn every day. This remarkable collection features over 80 models and a wide collection of jewelry as well. This museum is known locally as an “ethnographic museum,” but the signposts in the city refer to it as a museum of traditional dress. It also displays traditional objects of Sardinian life like hunting weapons, musical instruments and all matter of religious objects.

It’s fascinating how even a small town like Nuoro has managed to create such a huge amount of cultural attractions. If you decide to visit the Museo Etnografico Sardo, you won’t regret it. It’s nice because the majority of the objects in the museum are traditional outfits like the ones they used in the old-fashioned town processions (they’re beautiful) and it’s interesting to learn about how the costumes fit into the island’s mythology and traditions. Yes, the Museo Etnografico Sardo is a very different museum, but it’s one that’s worth a visit.

This museum is an institution dedicated to research, dissemination and preservation of historical and anthropological perspective of social processes and respect for cultural diversity. It has vast collections of archeology, ethnography and biological anthropology. Displayed in the museum are more than ten thousand pieces of bone of individuals from different populations and some mummified bodies. So be sure not to go when you are in a rush.
