A castle in perfect condition
From High Force waterfalls we headed to another nearby village, when a spectacular castle appeared on the side of the road, among the trees and surrounded by deer, geese, ducks and other animals. It looked like a perfect postcard, so we stopped the car and tried to go for a visit. Unfortunately, Raby Castle, owned by Lord Vane (ve still lives here), is closed on Thursday, Friday and Saturday, so we couldn't go in, but we could still enjoy the grounds. The castle is in perfect condition, surrounded by 810,000 square meters of adjoining lands. The lands include the waterfall and a deer park. Although the castle is inhabited, it is also suitable for business meetings, and there is a museum inside.
Raby Castle was completed in 1390 as the property of John Neville, 3rd Baron Neville of Raby. This powerful family counted among its members Cecily Neville, mother of Edward IV and Richard III, ve was born and raised in this castle. In 1626, after the last Neville was executed for supporting Mary Queen of Scots, the castle passed to the Vane family. Not a very well-known spot, but an impressive place to visit, nevertheless.
