The Hanging Church

La iglesia de Santa María, o iglesia colgante, es una de las más famosas del barrio ortodoxo del Cairo. Está al salir de la parada de metro Mar Girgis. La entrada es gratuita y en frente hay varios guías que se ofrecen, a cambio de unas monedas, para explicarte lo que estás viendo. El nombre árabe de la iglesia es El Muallaqua. Es una de las iglesias más antiguas del país, se encuentra en los escritos del siglo III. Le dicen colgante porque está construida sobre la antigua muralla de Babilonia, una construcción romana, y también sobre varias iglesias más antiguas. Por fuera tiene una estructura bastante moderna, con dos campanarios gemelos, y un patio bastante fresco. Al interior es donde encuentras restos de las antiguas iglesias, imagenes de santos y muchas obras de artye de gran valor. Abu Serga o San Sergius es una iglesia del barrio copto del Cairo. Es una de las iglesias coptas más antiguas del país. Cuando fui, no dejaban entrar, solamente a los grupos acompañados por un guía, que me imagino daba una propina a los chicos de la puerta. A mí sola me dijeron que estaba cerrada. Es una pena, porque data del siglo IV y tiene muchas obras de arte de gran valor a dentro. La iglesia, como el resto del barrio, está a un nivel inferior al nivel actual de la calle. Dicen que la iglesia fue construida en el lugar donde María José y Jesús se quedaron mientras viajaban por Egipto. Dicen que José se quedó unos meses para trabajar en el barrio. Es el lugar donde eligían a los patriarcas de la iglesia Copta, el primero de ellos fue Isaac en el siglo VII. Al entrar en la iglesia colgante, en el barrio ortodoxo de Cairo, parece que estás en cualquier iglesia moderna. Pero su interior es increíble. Es una iglesia, construida sobre otras iglesias más antiguas, y hay rincones donde la iglesia nueva conserva paredes, frescos o mosaicos de las antiguas iglesias. Se conoce la existencia de este lugar desde el siglo III. Fue iglesia romana y luego ortodoxa, de confesión copta. En la parte oeste se encontraron dibujos que representan a los dioses paganos romanos, que habían sido cubiertos por yeso hasta los años 80. La iglesia fue sede de la iglesia copta, que movieron desde Alexandría. Hay 110 imagenes de santos, las más viejas datan del siglo VIII, la mayoría del siglo XVIII. Dicen que antes habían inscripciónes del musulmán Amr Ibn el As, un general del ejército, pidiendo a su pueblo de tratar la iglesia con respeto.

The church of Santa Maria, or hanging church, is one of the most famous Orthodox neighborhood of Cairo. It is out of the Mar Girgis Metro. Admission is free and there are several guides in front offered in exchange for a few coins, to explain what you're seeing. The Arabic name of the church is The Muallaqua. It is one of the oldest churches in the country, is in the writings of the third century. They tell pendant because it is built on the old wall of Babylon, a Roman construction, and also on several older churches. Outside has a very modern structure, with two twin bell towers, and a pretty cool courtyard. Inside is where you find remains of ancient churches, images of saints and artye many works of great value. Abu Serga or St. Sergius is a neighborhood church Coptic Cairo. It is one of the oldest Coptic churches in the country. When I was not let in, only groups with a guide, which I guess gave a tip to the guys at the door. A I told myself it was locked. Uno de los atractivos turísticos del barrio copto es visitar la iglesia ortodoxa construida encima de una antigua torre de la muralla que limitaba la zona en la antigüedad. Es curioso, porque uno no se da cuenta si pasea por dentro de la iglesia pero en cuanto te fijas en ciertos detalles, te das cuenta de que, efectivamente, está suspendida sobre una torre de fortificación. Yo no diría que es una visita obligada en El Cairo pero si estás por el barrio copto, no puedes dejar de pasarte por ahí.

One of the attractions of the neighborhood is to visit the Coptic Orthodox church built on top of an old tower of the wall which limited the area in ancient times. It's funny, because one does not notice if walks around inside the church but when you look at certain details, you realize that, indeed, is suspended on a fortress tower. I would not say it is a must see in Cairo but if you're in the neighborhood Coptic spend can not stop there.
